The History
of Fly Iowa
Fly Iowa is a
non-profit statewide aviation fair organized by the Iowa
Aviation Promotion Group and selected host communities and
airports. Fly Iowa began in 1991 and has been held in different Iowa communities including Spencer, Ottumwa, Iowa
City, Boone, Ft Dodge, Waterloo, Le Mars, Cedar Rapids,
Washington in 2004 and Clarinda was selected for the 2005
event. The goals of Fly Iowa are to increase public
knowledge and support of aviation and local airports through
an entertaining and educational public event. We want the
public to see the importance of airports and aviation to the
economic development of Iowa communities. Fly Iowa
activities include educational exhibits and displays of
aircraft and career opportunities in aviation, and a fly-in
breakfast. And of course, an air show is a cornerstone of
the event. In sum, a Fly Iowa is a fun, family oriented
event! The organization of a Fly Iowa is a partnership
between the host community and the Iowa Aviation Promotion
Group, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. Iowa Aviation
Promotion Group provides seed money to match money raised by
the host community and guidance and counsel in the conduct
of an aviation event. Iowa Aviation Promotion Group is a
member of the international council of air shows. Fly Iowa
also provides a venue for businesses of the local community
to step forth and build community goodwill. Fly Iowa was
supported financially by the Iowa Department of
Transportation, until the state budget shortfalls forced the
withdrawal of support.
